Creative Activity #1: Creature Feature Poems
monster.jpg (4871 bytes)

To enjoy a poem you must be able to visualize in your head what's going on. This section is a lot like the Comparing Aliens Poems Section but this time you are going to read and draw about creatures or situations with creatures in them.  In this assignment you are going to read three poems about creatures, see if you can visualize what is happening in the poem and then draw some pictures.

Your Assignment:

You might need all three poems "open" at the same time to do your assignment.  You can do this in several ways:  You can copy/paste the three poems to a Word document and print the pages or if you are using Internet Explorer  you can choose FILE, choose NEW, choose WINDOW and open three different windows on your internet browser.   Then you can go to the three different sites and have them open at the same time.

After you have read the poems:trifold pic.jpg (2105 bytes)

  • Divide a piece of drawing paper into thirds.  Put the name of one poem at the top of each column.  Draw a picture of what you think the creatures looks like in each poem. Color the pictures.

  • Divide a piece of drawing paper into 9 sections.   Draw a 3 panel comic strip about each poem. (If you need more boxes then fold the paper into the appropriate number of squares or use a different piece of paper for each comic strip.) Color the comic strip and turn it in to your teacher.

An Irritating Creature
Read the poem below.
There's an irritating creature
in my living room today,
it's been here for now,
and it will not go away.
The first time that I saw it,
it was in my easy chair.
and displayed no inclination
to forsake its station there.
I put it in a parcel.
And left it at the store
the thing was there to greet me.
when I opened up my door,
I took it to the forest,
and tied it to a tree,
I found it in my kitchen
having sandwiches and tea.
I packed it in a carton
to disguise its size and shape,
I wrapped it and I stamped it
and I sealed it shut with tape.
I mailed it to the
on a mountain in Tibet,
I returned to see it sitting
on my brand-new TV set.
I concealed it in a rocket
that was bound for outer space,
it was back that very evening
with a smile upon its face.
It appears I can't evict it,
though I truly wish I could,
it's entirely too tenacious-
I suspect it's here for good!
