Virtual Worlds Worksheet #9
History

Key Concepts: History is a record of things that have happened in the past in your country.  Give some thought to the history of the US and other countries.  You may fabricate whatever tales of discovery, settlement, and war, conflict that you want to include.   You need to think about location and geography when inventing your history, but it may be as creative as you want it to be.

Think about Migration:  (Information from Create a Culture, @The Learning Works, Inc.) Migration is the movement of a group from one place to another.  Migration can be short or long—across a region, a continent, or an ocean.  The factors that cause a culture to migrate play a part in determining the distance and direction of the migration and how people in your world view the experience.  How long the migration took, the difficulties encountered, and the ingenuity and cooperation needed to make the trip all shape your world’s history and development.

The people in your world might migrate because:

  1. The natural resources are damaged or nearly used up
  2. Changes in the weather or climate have made life too difficult
  3. Neighboring worlds pose a danger or are threatening to take over the are
  4. Traders have told tales of great opportunity or riches in another place
  5. Invaders sweeping the land are getting near your area

Sometimes individuals leave a place and migrate as a small group because:

  1. They no longer agree with the leaders, rules or customs
  2. Opportunities to succeed are denied them
  3. They are sent or taken to a new location as prisoners, hostages, servants or slaves

Answer the questions in the space provided:

Assignment: Design a flag for your world.  Remember that many flags look like they do for a reason.  The flag of the US has 13 stripes that represent the 13 original colonies. The flag of Mexico shows an eagle with a serpent in its mouth.  In 1325, the Aztec people came from the North into the area that is now Mexico City.  They saw and eagle with a serpent in its mouth perched on a cactus.  The Aztec priests decided that this was a sign from the gods, and built their city, Tenochtitlan, on that very spot.

Your flag should be brightly colored and made of cut construction paper.
