Virtual Worlds Worksheet #6
Imports and Exports

Key Concepts: An import is something that is brought from another country to be sold.  It is often an item that the country cannot provide for itself.  Today many items are made in other countries and brought into our country because the labor is cheaper in other countries.  Many countries are dependent upon imports. A small nation with very little farmland will have to import much of its food.  A developing nation with little industry will need to import manufactured goods. An export is an item that a country sells to another.  Sometimes these things are sold because the country can produce more than it needs itself.  The country can then use the income to buy imports it needs.

Think About:

Can your world grow all the food it needs to feed its population?

Does it have livestock to provide meat?

Can it manufacture all the products it needs?

Which items will your country need to export?

Are there goods in your world you can sell to others?

What natural resources might be sold?

Fill in these charts with your world’s imports and exports.
